Summary: "It's OK, but..."
I think it's been mis-titled. There was plenty of wild Alaska included, but not much as far as 'wild men' goes. I had high hopes for this book, thinking it would be on par with Capstick's 'Death in the Long Grass'. It didn't even come CLOSE. While the author has some good stories about hunting and fishing in Alaska, he glosses over them, leaving out far too many details. Also, he wastes way too much ink telling old jokes and anecdotes that we've all heard before--very unoriginal.
But the biggest problem is that the book put me off because of his constant references to religion and how God wanted him to do this and God needed him to do that and God was testing him. Enough already--we get it. The pattern developed very early, and each chapter was written like he was using his hunting stories to deliver a sermon. Without fail, the last couple of paragraphs of each chapter read like a Sunday-school lesson, like he was trying to make everything that happened to him fit into his view of God's Plan For His Life, while still trying to sell a bunch of hunting stories.
Had I known that, I would've never bought this book.

You dont have to be a hunter to enjoy this book. A guided hunt with Rocky is definitely on my must do list. I highly recommend this as a great read for those who enjoy real life adventure! I found this book to be almost impossible to put down and have shared it with others who have greatly enjoyed the read. It is clear from his writing that Rocky McElveen is a man of high integrity.

Summary: "A real pleasure"
This book includes such men as Dave Dravecky, President Bush Senior, pro ball players, millionaires, and ordinary folks like us. Some say this is the best book they have ever read, (and it is followed by his new book that is also facinating, Wild Men, Wild Alaska 11). Franklin Graham, Rocky's dear friend, and often Alaskan companion, loves it, an so will you. Brilliantly written with sparkling narrative.
Some of the most heart touching stories you will ever read, about wild and superbly beautiful Alaska. Wild Men, Wild Alaska is a Bonanza revealing the very heart of the innermost cravings buried in modern man, the glory of Creation, and the intricate interplay between scores of bear, moose, caribou, wolves, and other animals, and the thrill of legitimate hunting and fishing. Some stories will make you weep, such as 'Run, Baby Run,' and 'A Beauty To Lose' about Sharon, his wife. Others will make you laugh. From plane crash to snarling grizzlies, to catching marvelous salmon and other Alaskan fish, to taking famous characters hunting or fishing, or visiting with Rocky, the book is riveting.

Summary: "Fascinating and entertaining"
As a woman with a sense of adventure, I found the book fascinating. I have always wanted to visit Alaska, as a matter of fact it is on my "bucket list". Through reading the accounts of the true-life adventures of Rocky and his guests, I got a real sense of what some of the remote areas of Alaska must be like. With word pictures of its pristine beauty and natural settings, I was able to take a mental vacation with this book.
More appealing than the offer of insight into the physical places and people, though, was the insight into a man's heart and his call to be as God created him to be. I am among a growing number of women who admire men that make no apologies for their manhood, as it is lived out according to God's design. I appreciate the writer being transparent and sincere in his struggles with God's creation, both in the physical, and in the spiritual.
I know a lot of hunters and fishermen and I am highly recommended the read. I also tell my female friends that they would gain valuable insight into the hearts of the men in their life with this book. It is entertaining and educational. I gave a copy to my pastor and he has given copies to his sons and recommending it to the men in my church.
